Kingwood Plumbing - prepare your pipes for the freeze.

How to Prepare Your Home for a Deep Freeze:
If temperatures drop below 32 in the Houston area one really needs to prepare their pipes for the cold. In order to help with any pipes breaking here are a few tips you can do to help.

  • Wrap all your outside water pipes: faucets, main water pipes, sprinkler vacuum breaker, etc.
You can purchase covers for these at your local hardware store. One can also wrap with towels and blankets to make sure pipes are not exposed. An old wash cloth and a koozie do great around an outside water faucet.
  • Drain and turn off your main valve to sprinkler vacuum breaker – then cover them.
  • Run a stream of water on your inside faucets especially any with plumbing on an outside wall – run one for each water tank.
  • Periodically flush your toilets.
  • Turn your pool pumps on to continually run to help the motor from freezing.
  • Open your under sink cabinets in your house to help heat the pipes.
  • Open closet doors also in case you have plumbing in the walls or ceiling.
  • Turn your thermostats hotter during the cold to help heat the home better.
  • Know where your main water valve is to shut your water off in case of broken pipes.
